I'm looking into various mobile options to let you guys access Scififur when you're on the go. So I'd like to know what sort of mobile phones you guys have. I've setup a poll here that you can vote on which should give me an idea of the popularity of various phones.
i have mine because, and only because, it is currently the only way for me to have a phone at all.
i don't really love voice telephony. in any form all that much.
and i'm especially not at all enthused of having to drag the fish bowl, so to speak, around with me.
which, yes, i know i can turn the ringer off, just as i often did with a land line.
hopefully the day will soon come again when i DON'T need to be reachable, or at last not at all hours,
and in all places.
i do like being able to take pictures with it, and to play tetris while waiting for a bus.
although i haven't figured out yet exactly how i'm supposed to transfer the pictures i take with it,
out of it into anything else.
i do have a decent separate digi cam also, that i take with me when i want to take 'real' pictures.
Heh, looks like Blackberry has lost quite a market share. It has 0 (at the time I was posting this) votes up there!
Among business the Blackberry is king, but I think it's telling that in our little community it isn't even on the map. I am a little bit surprised at the amount of feature phones though. Then again, having a smart phone is pretty expensive as it requires you to also have a data plan, so I can understand why students, which a lot of the folks here are do not have them.
Personally if I had a smart phone my brain would explode. I need to disconnect from the internet after a while. My mobile phone is merely a device for necessary communications, not a palmtop computer.

Wow i'm totally the opposite - the only thing i dislike about computers is all the sitting around they encourage; being able to go for a walk and browse the web at the same time would be perfect.
(Obv i'm a big fan of Thad Starner, who has been wearing a computer continuously since 1993
(also i think it's cool that Google allow random dogs to attend talks (it's not a seeing-eyed dog or anything...)))
current update, as of i don't know how many months ago, must be six months i think, didn't realize i'd been that inactive relative to here, but anyway i HAD a cell phone. hadn't actually ran out of days yet at the time, but it was after everybody had gone home for a three day weekend or something that it was going to, so guess what, there was no way to prevent deactivation. i'm still enough angered by that that i'm not planning on getting another one from them. them being trac-phone. and i had a ton of minuetes on it at the time too. well over four hundred. and the seem to have a policy of refusing to reactivate. at least i couldn't get it to do so through the web site.
thing is, not being all that social, and thank the god or gods that be, having an income, however modest, that i hopefully don't have to worry about, i can get along without voice phoneage at all. anybody REALLY needs to get ahold of me can use my e-mail. that's what its for.
it WAS a good pocket watch and tetrus game. but that's almost all it actually was to me most of the time.

The only gripe I have, is of late, trying to type in the quick reply box is a total bitch cause of the lag it seems to have as of the latest update...still check and use it regularly though xp
Verizon iPhone 4 -unlimited data
I love verizon coverage xp it's awesome, I find myself relying on it a LOT cause I don't have access continuously with my laptop

So I'm guessing that the Smart Phones are starting to gain more traction. This is a good thing, since they really are handy little devices to have on hand. One of these days I'm going to have to get one.
if i ever get another phone, unless i can move into some place where i can have a broadband landline, i'll get one from creedo. but i LIKE not living in a damd fishbowl all the time.

I have an HTC Android phone. It is a super nice telephone.
In fact, when my contract on my cellular modem expires, I'll be using my Android exclusively for Internet access. It gives blazingly fast connection speeds and it tethers to my laptop flawlessly.
As for practicality, however...
I wouldn't get one, or any phone like it, if you led any kind of really active lifestyle. It is a heavy little phone, and is as delicate as an egg. Not a particularly wanted combination if you're in situations where you might be prone to dropping it. Mine is mounted on my dash and seldom ventures out of the truck with me, and then only in a really tough case, if ever it does.
Beyond that, the touch screen is very responsive. It's got loads of memory which is expandable with the use of memory card, and it has a reasonably good battery life. Good reliability call-wise, too.
My phone has a choice of on-screen keyboard or one that slides out.
As for direct access to the Internet with the phone, it does reasonably well. It doesn't support a lot of CSS or javascript, though - so you're pretty much restricted to visiting only commercial websites with it, where there is script especially written to accommodate these phones. It has a lot of trouble with sites that make extensive use of special effects.
All in all, a solid little phone. I am not too keen on how delicate it is, but for all that, I really enjoy it.

The nice thing about Android is how customizable it is. The default Android web browser is alright, but it is very limited in some areas as you said. There are several alternative browsers though that you can use. If your phone had Icecream Sandwich you could use Chrome for Android, but so far only one or two phones have that. The Dolphin Browser is a very popular choice, and does a bit better with pages than the default android browser.
I wish HTC didn't make so many phones last year, because it's almost impossible to find out which specific one you have now.
i have a phone that can access the interwebs but its not the greatest. I plan to upgrade to an android when my tax refund decides to finally show up in my account
