Lightfirean Vixen
Deep Space Mission (OOC)
[Somewhat corny name, but oh well. This is the OOC for my 'Yet to be Named' idea.]
[Here is some background information to help you construct your characters:]
The Lightfireans have a line of secret ships, known simply as 'science vessels'. These vessels are equipped to experiment with unknown and usually dangerous technology. Some occurrences have been engaging a experimental drive and never to be seen again, or testing a new AI system that went rouge soon after.
In order to maximize results, and cut costs, these science vessels are now equipped with all things they want to test rather than just one thing. To keep turmoil from breaking out, all of the ships are equipped with a 'Dauntless' drive - derived from seeder technology it can jump a ship instantly huge distances, but is entirely unpredictable as to where it will put you. It's programmed to jump if experiments on board go wrong, making it someone else's problem.
The LUS-Eulaeru (Ew-lay-ru) is such a ship. It's main experiment is genetically tailored people and creatures, however it is also carrying many other experiments as well. It had a regular crew, but some of the genetic beings in stasis tubes have crew ranks.
Something went wrong. Eulaeru made it's automated jump, and now all power is down - even emergency power. When emergency power was lost your stasis tube dumped you. The only light is small lights that are powered by a local battery. The power loss was so extreme even the grav plating is offline. There is no-one to greet you, but you can smell death. Some of the other tubes were dumped also though, maybe you aren't alone.
[Right then, if you couldn't derive it from the reading you're not a regular crewman. You're an experiment of some kind(this is so you can have more freedom on what you are), however the more powerful your genetic modifications are - the less control over them you will have.]
Name: (if he or she has one or can even remember it)
Age: (apparent age, if you were born in the tube you might only be a week old, but look 20)
Gender: (if it has gender)
Species: (if it resembles a species)
Skill Set: Security, Engineer, Science, etc (Those would only apply if it existed before now an received training - if it doesn't have training it doesn't qualify)
Abilities Pros: (boosts of genetic*or other kinds* of changes)
Abilities Cons: (Try to keep a balance, if there is imbalance here the compensation will be your character losing sanity time to time)

Re: Deep Space Mission (OOC)
I'll bite!
Name: Phelan Restin
Age:
-Apparent: 35
-Biological: 14
Gender: Male, sterile
Species: Chimeric hybridization, cougar x hawk. "Gryphon" appearance w/o wings. Engineered as a microgravity operation specialist.
Skill Set: Structural repair and salvage technician by training. Highly skilled in use of all manner of cutting, fabrication and repair tools. Not trained in use of weapons. Highly skilled in microgravity and EVA maneuvering, enhanced by operation training. Basic knowlege of most shipboard computer systems. Cannot and will not "hack", but can operate with some proficiency.
Abilities Pros:
-Industrial prosthetic eyes :
Details
Assigned after a training accident resulting in explosive decompression and the loss of Phelan's large and vulnerable eyes, as well as structural damage to a large part of his face. Includes two imaging devices and a processing core powered by the brain.
Left eye unit contains visual-band, enhanced visual-band (Roughly equivalent to fourth-generation night vision), and upper-infrared imaging (roughly equivalent to generation zero active night-vision, basically how robots see. Colorless, grainy, lacking range and resolution.)
Right eye contains sonar/doppler imaging and rangefinding device.
Brain core is an implant inside Phelan's skull, near the back, that combines the two images and outputs an analog signal to Phelan's vision centers. Can combine sonar/doppler image as a momentary overlay over left-eye pictures, but prolonged use will cause disorientation and vertigo.
-Cochlear modification :
Description.
Genetically altered inner ear structure permits heightened sense of gravity, inertia, and acceleration.
-Antisepsis genotype :
Description.
Body produces a very strong immune response at wound sites and capillaries, effectively preventing infection in most wounds.
Abilities Cons:
-Reliant on electrical power :
Description.
Different types of vision require different amounts of power.
Upper-IR imaging is powered by the brain's own microelectric charges, but is uncomfortable and difficult to use.
Visual-band is efficient on power consumption, but *does* require a charged CCD, and thus, a battery.
Enhanced visual band requires the use of a CCD and a digital photomultiplier, requiring extra power to both operate and compute.
Sonar/doppler imaging requires a lot of power for the emitter/collector array, as well as an enormous amount of computation power to assess doppler ranging and velocity.
-FUnctionality :
Description.
Without an external battery pack or hardsuit connection, Phelan can only see in upper-IR. This is *not* heat vision, on the contrary, it's the same light your TV remote uses. It's low-powered, cheap and durable, but very crude and difficult to use.
For obvious reasons, sonogram imaging does not work in a vacuum and may develop "noise" in a very geometrically complex environment.
-Freaking ugly :
Description.
Industrial imaging devices are big and scary, require alterations to owner's eye-sockets.
No, we're not talking, "Wow, his eyes are funny". We're talking, "Holy crap, is that thing even *alive*?"
-G-sickness :
Description.
A by-product of genetically enhanced cochlea, one of the more unpleasent side effects. Creates natural motion sickness when exposed to acceleration forces such as gravity or starship acceleration. Can and will become physically ill transitioning between microgravity and gravity fields.
-Fibrous avian skeleton :
Description.
Phelan's skeleton is mostly mammalian in shape, but quite avian in composition. Bones are composed of a fibrous, slightly elastic material that will bend slightly before it breaks. While this makes Phelan's body a few pounds lighter, a negligible difference, it means his already fragile bones require specialized equipment to set when broken.
-Antisepsis gene side effects :
Description.
One of the most pronounced side-effects of the anti-infection phenotype is that it causes a bodily response very similar to an extreme case of Behcet's Disease. Ulcers and small, painful lesions on extremeties and tongue that affect mood and temperment, as well as concentration. Treatable with medication. Talons seem unaffected due to lacking capillaries near the surface of the scaly, leathery talons.
If this doesn't seem bad to you, you most likely do not suffer from apthous ulcers.
-Terrified of exposure to hard vacuum.
Description.
Will occasionally have panic attacks simply because of the thought of it, though this can be quelled by remaining in or near an intact pressure suit until he's able to calm himself down. Decompression alarms have a much more substantial effect. For this reason, Phelan often "forgets" to remove his EVA suit whenever possible.
I shouldn't have to mention that this causes problems when an EVA suit is inaccessible or unavailable.

@redtail
At first glance it seemed like the cons outweighed the pros. Then upon further reading the issues aren't bad or aren't enough to counter. For example, although you list all the things the eye requires power to do it's not really a problem, it's just limitation on a thing that is still a boost... then the vacuum thing, I should see it as a benefit to always be in your EVA suit not a problem. Ugly isn't a problem because you're not here to get a mate lol.... The other things look ok, but not quite enough on their own to counter the pros.

Re: Deep Space Mission (OOC)
I think you're understating the phobias and neuroses in an RP where you've explicitly stated you'd be doling out temporary insanity, but I'd be glad to nerf some of the functionality of the eyes and cut out the skeleton in entirety. Give me a few minutes, I think you'll like this.
EDIT:
Nerfed thermal imaging, laser rangefinder and ultraviolet band.
Visible-spectrum now requires a charged CCD, which means an external power source.
Active UIR is now the "default" vision spectrum because of its ghastly simplicity and durability. This means that Phelan is no longer capable of seeing more than about 75 feet in front of him, seeing color, or reading CRT displays without a battery, fuel cell, capacitor pack, or... extension cord.
Skeleton is no longer reinforced, replaced with fibrous avian bone structure which also helps explain damage to his eye sockets during explosive decompression and... Ocular detonation.

Yeah, if you want it all like it is I will do the insanity thing - basically in the heat of something important happening you'll lose control of your character xD not a good thing. You don't have to nerf a whole lot, jsut some
I still need 1 more person

Re: Deep Space Mission (OOC)
Sorry, didn't see this one or make the connection. Just let me know if ya want any of it changed.
Name:
Richard Morrison
Age:
Actual - 26
Apparent - 10
Gender:
Male
Species:
Tiger
Skill Set:
Reconnaissance - Professionally trained in several forms of information retrieval and survival
Abilities Pros:
Magnetic Skeleton - His skeleton is augmented to produce a usable, but minor, personal magnetic field. Can hold small and light metal objects against his body or himself against a metal surface, assuming there's minimal outside force.
Eidetic Memory
Abilities Cons:
EM Vulnerability - Because of the magnetic skeleton, he is much more sensitive to changes in electromagnetic fields. Simply being near a regularly changing one causes minor discomfort. Sudden and drastic changes can cause disorient and nauseate. A powerful spike can easily incapacitate him.
Physical Defect - A side effect of the genetic and chemical age control, his body is dependent on several medications. Without them, he's in crippling pain that prevents him from doing much more than slowly dragging himself to where his medicine is.

I think in your case your Cons are too much, you can lessen them some if you like.
Also, did you mix up your actual and apparent ages? You want to look 10?

Re: Deep Space Mission (OOC)
Part of the character idea. Genetic control over the aging process to prevent aging-related diseases. Since this "project" was for reconnaissance, the smaller size was part of the extreme end of the test. So, yes, I'm sure I want my character to appear to be a child still. I'm just not sure what else to add for Pros. Devices would be iffy with the magnetic skeleton, and I don't see many other genetic perks to try...
Only thing I can think of for additional Pros would be specially designed equipment, or bio-mechanical implants, to augment off the higher-powered personal magnetic field. Not sure what I'd have them do
EDIT: After thinking for a bit, I think I got a few changes that could work.
Pro added:
Magno-tech implants: Custom and experimental implants designed to selectively convert the amplified personal magnetic field into variable and usable electric currents. Draining to different degrees based on voltage needed; known are hacking basic electric locks and melee-ranged electric stun. Alternate implant amplifies magnetic grip around the palms, allowing grip and climb up to .75g of passive force.
Con altered:
Physical Defect: Augmented genetics and implant controls require medications to maintain physical stature. Lack of medication leaves him disoriented and unable to safely use his implants.

Sounds good.
I think I'll lock it at these characters. It's just a theory but I'm thinking too many people is what kills RPs
I'll start us up tomorrow

Re: Deep Space Mission (OOC)
this sounds like the kind of idea that i like. but i think i want to wait and see where it's going before committing myself.
why am i replying to this? because it does sound, potentially, interesting to me.
also if something else starts up that involves me more directly, then of course that's where i'll have to be instead.
(oops. sorry i didn't see the closing before i said the above. tsall ok.)
themnax's Signature its not what stands or falls, but what its replaced by or evolves into, that we actually have to live with.
