This show could have been nothing but insipid corporate whoring on the part of Hasbro.
It could have been nothing but sugar-coated garbage that inspires nausea and diabetes in girls and a temporary vagina in boys.
And yet......it's not. These damned ponies have melted my cold, steely heart.
Yep, you've guessed it. I'm talking about My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic... The single most unlikely cult hit to come out of the current glut of garbage animation. Who would have thought that, of all things, a cartoon show based on a girl's toy line would turn out to not only stand out, but stand out in a GOOD way.
Do NOT let the initial superficial layer of girlyness (i.e. the first two episodes) fool you. This show is VERY well done. It's well animated, well written, well composed, well acted, well EVERYTHING. The animation is smooth, the writing is genuinely funny and sometimes profound, the universe is relatively intresting and even complex, the music is actually pretty catchy, the voice-acting is top notch....ITS JUST FREAKING GOOD.
And why?
Because the woman at the head of this whole project is Lauren Faust. Faust has worked on shows such as the Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends....basically she's responsible for some of the most high quality syndicated cartoon shows of the last decade. She fought tooth and nail with the higher ups to make this project to be NOT just another throwaway tie-in series. And I'll be damned if she didn't succeed gloriously.
...I'm not kidding about the complexity of the universe, btw. I have a friend on another forum whose based entire Dn'D quests around the MLP universe!
Confound these ponies....they've turned me into a fan.
If this show is great, than I am truly happy you guys are enjoying it. As for me though, I grew up during the 80's. I had to suffer through my sister hogging the TV when the original show was on. I would say "could it be better than the original?" but that really isn't much of a question. The original one was terrible.

Daryn, this show leaves the original so far in the dust it's amazing.
Trust me, I was raised on the original as well. This show is so completely different from the original it's astounding.
Ah good old Hasbro's MLP eh? Used to work with them once very long long time ago as a freelance and nothing more. Well all I can say is that I'm quite satisfied with the path they taking now.
And as surprising as the sound may be but yes I can draw these ponies. . . and I did alot too in the past. . . XP

Haha, wow! You really do have quite a history! Am I the only one who would really like to see a "Legacy My Little Cyborg Pony" now?
But anyhoo, yeah, the show is really well done. I can't fault it on that. However, I've watched a couple episodes now and... I don't really see why it's an internet phenomenon. I've said this before and I'll say it again: To me, MLP:FIM is like the complete opposite of Adventure Time. It's a really solid animation that is perfect for kids and good quality, but doesn't, to my mind, offer much to older audiences (not that it should, kids shows should be for kids). Adventure Time is a terrible show for kids, but it's perfect for the idiotic short-attention span random-humour-loving internet goers such as myself.
I wish this My Little Ponies cartoon all the best, because lord knows we need some decent kids shows (They've been on decline for a long time, I think. My favourites were of course the ones I had when I was a kid, but I'm afraid I probably have to admit the generation before that was of an even higher quality) but I still don't really... get it.

Wow! That's...actually...really f'ing cool! She almost looks like she could be seen in a SciFi epic as a Guardian of a Gate...or realm...or key...or whatever. Awesome job!

By chance, was it the first two episodes? Because the first two aren't exactly equal to the quality of episodes three and onward.
