The setting itself would take place on a decently sized ship (though a lot smaller than the Destiny from SGU). You (the player) would be a part of a quasi-alien team sent by a unified government of your home world to investigate a ship that suddenly appeared in the space near the planet. This ship, of course, has been traveling the stars for a VERY long time and has seen some action.
Now let me clarify something. I said quasi-alien because the planet you're from is not Earth, neither is it in the Milky Way galaxy (the ship however is). Now, I don't have a species design in mind. If you all want, I can probably come up with one, or I can let you all flesh it out.
So, you can probably see where some of the SGU influence is, but I don't intend for it to be a replica.
This won't be a combat centric RP, though I do plan for some such encounters.
I would like to have 3-4 people starting out. While the team would be bigger, they would be NPCs.
Anyway, I'll answer any questions and give more background later.
So I'm correct in assuming we are the right people for this mission? I'm interested mostly because I'm a huge SG-U fan. If were all the same race of Alien I think it would be best for the gm to sort it out.
Heh, that is a good point. I just didn't want to do furry for the sake of furry for 1 reason. This RP takes place in the universe I created and have been fleshing out for the better part of the past 3 years and I already incorporated furries into it (to an extent). That said, I wouldn't know how to bring them into this part of the galaxy, unless they were on the ship since the beginning. And while normally I would have no problem with someone using a furry character in this manner, they wouldn't know the history, culture, and technology. If that makes sense.
But like I said, only the setting is similar to SGU. Mixed team of military and non-military personnel (scientists and few from the private sector).
I'd like to join. I've never seen SGU, although I am a fan of the continuity.\
Edit: Hey, I just had a thought. Why not have multiple races calling the world home, like in D&D? Our world could well have had multiple sentient races if things had gone just a bit differently, so why not?
@Brome: This one actually isn't the one I had in mind. I only really thought of this one the other day. Although I may still go for the one I thought sometime in the future.
@Arratra: Don't worry, I just used SGU as something to compare to. And I was planning on drawing out a rough design for the alien species. However, having the players come up with a species would save me time. That was a concern of mine however, that a species I made wouldn't appeal to everyone's interest. I just wouldn't let people use something too close to what you would find on Earth. If anything, I would say use Mass Effect, Star Wars, or Star Trek as an example. Plenty of humanoid species without seeming like they came from Earth. And I'm not saying they can't have animalistic traits either. Anyway, I think you get my point. Essentially I'm fine with it, as long as it would be creative.
I'll create a character sheet once we get one more person.
Species & Physical description: (height, weight, species characteristics.)
Position on Team: (Military personnel, scientist, medic, etc.)
Equipment: (Let me write up the general gear before you fill this part out. Wouldn't want you to bring in something above or below the tech level of the rest of the planet!)
Pretty simple. More general information about the planet you're from coming soon!
Sure thing! Just keep in mind I was using SGU as an example of setting. While there will be similarities throughout, there will be plenty of differences as well.
Some general information about the people and their solar system (mostly just to provide background information).
On this planet, several species gained sentience. Conflicts plague their early history, as the various species vied for control and dominance. In their recent past, it took four great wars and the beginnings of overpopulation before a mutual truce and arms reduction was established. This led to an economic boom that began to stretch into their solar system. Over the next few centuries, the unified conglomerate of species would develop fusion, colonize nearby planets, and establish a (relatively) small fleet of ships. While not capable of FTL travel, even the slowest of their ships can travel to any of their colonies in a matter of days (not including shuttles and 1-2 person craft). While every colony has at least one space elevator, their home planet has four that protrude from the surface. Fusion batteries large and small power the everything from the smallest ships buildings to their largest vessels and cities. Quantum computers are also in slow development, the few existing ones are only capable of sending text and audio messages back and forth.
Their military, so to speak, is more of a peace keeping force, as the only conflicts since the unification are the rare insurrection amongst the colonies, and the slowly growing presence of piracy. Most weapons are ballistic at their core using cartridge ammunition, while their largest military ships sport rail guns that shoot solid ammunition without the aid of an explosive cartridge. The largest of these ships being around 120 meters long.
Flash forward to the present (and when this RP takes place). A large ship of unknown origin seemed to appear out of nowhere roughly 642 kilometers away from the busiest space elevator above their home planet. When it was picked up on sensors, first a military ship was sent to make sure it was not a threat, followed by several research vessels. This unknown ship was unlike anything they have seen. There was no detectable trace of a power source, the first researchers assumed it was because the ship ran out of power, but what could only be described as an energy barrier quickly changed the assumption. There were no visible thrusters or other known means of propulsion, leaving the question of how it moves a mystery. Many researchers and military personnel argue on both sides of whether several protrusions from the ship's hull are weapons or some other devices. This is because while they resemble small scale rail guns, there is no apparent area for a projectile to be loaded.
So far, external research has determined that there are 4 of these protrusions on what is assumed to be the underside of the ship, and one larger one on the top, roughly in the middle. 3 other protrusions were also found on what is assumed to be the stern of the ship, but these differ from the others as they are not pairs. The location of the bridge has not been determined. What is assumed to be battle damage also dots the ship, and has created 2 openings, both in areas with an undetermined purpose. Despite the energy barrier, it was found that coaxing an object slowly through one of the openings would allow it to pass.
After 10 days of external research, the use of a team has been approved to research the internal of the ship.
Next up will be an equipment manifest of supplies.
Species & Physical description: At 6'10", Leonidas is towering even for one of his tall race, known as the Dray. He is reasonably well-built for one of his generally slender kind, weighing in at almost 150 pounds of muscle, bone, and rock-hard sinew. His hands have four digits, like the rest of his kind; three fingers and an opposable thumb. Dray (or Dragonborn as they are often called by the other races, although the reason is unknown) have long, thick scales on their heads that are also flexible, making it seem as if many of them have thick, ropy hair. Leonidas keeps his in a loose bunch, although it spreads out after a short distance, making it seem like he's attached spikes to his head. His silvery-blue skin makes him fairly distinctive, however, and it is an odd feature for one of his kind, as they generally have duller-coloured scales. Like all of his kind, there are a trio of triangular scale-like plates on each of his elbows, although how and why they evolved remains a mystery. His rather obvious appearance got him into trouble more than once in boot camp before he figured out how to camouflage his reflective skin correctly. Interestingly, he wields a pair of hand-and-a-half longswords as well as his guns, due to Dray military tradition.

Currently working on a rough sketch of the ship, equipment manifest, and a species for Dusty.
@Samantha: You're gonna have to come up with something a little different as far as species is concerned. I'm fine with something animal like, but nothing you'd find directly from Earth. Basically, just add something that would set them distinctly apart from an Earthen anthro fox.

Is this taking place even in the Milky Way galaxy as we know it? If it is, you can do the thing where an ancient race picked up species from Earth eons ago, placed them on planets throughout the galaxy and then they evolved(this is what I use). If it's not taking place in Milky Way galaxy, pure chance? I like meh foxes.
If it makes people happy, you can go ahead and make a furry character. I would rather not deter people for something like this. So Sam, you can keep your foxes.
Dusty, you can go ahead and create a furry character if you wish.
And to reiterate my original post, this does NOT take place in the Milky Way galaxy. The ship, however, is from the Milky Way, and has been traveling for roughly 1000 years.
Also, Nelle has withdrawn his interest from the RP.
If there are any questions about the setting, PLEASE let me know!

Behold! The long awaited equipment manifest! Also, a quick (therefor crappy) profile sketch of what the ship looks like.
Please note, the following is what the team brings with them and does not include what may already be on the ship itself.
Equipment Manifest:
Food:
1 cooking apparatus.
8 Large crates, the equivalent to forty 24 hour days for a team of 20 (more if properly rationed).
1000 gallons of water.
Clothing:
Each member of the team has 3 changes of clothes. 2 uniforms + 1 'casual' outfit. (Non-military/scientist personnel are issued jumpsuits identifying themselves as such).
Utility:
3 EVA suits (omni-species).
2 1x.5 meter fusion batteries.
35 utility lights.
4 75ft length ropes.
25 dish sets (cups, plates, bowls, etc. 1 for each team member +5 spares).
3 'field restrooms'.

5 flashlights (not including military personnel).
5 empty crates (1 large, 2 medium, 3 small).
Research:
1 Quantum computer (text based messaging only).
6 portable computers (1 for each member of the research team).
2 video recording devices.
4 interface devices (please note, not a hacking device. These will aid primarily the opening of doors that are not securely locked.)

Basic medical supplies only (mostly what you would expect a modern field medic to carry).
Personal Items:
(can be virtually anything within reason and will require approval. Also keep in mind that an extended stay is not expected. It is initially planned that each person on the team will be there for no more than 30 days before being rotated out, with ships ready to resupply their efforts.)
Edited my entry to include the equipment. I included his swords, and a wrist-mounted mini-computer. I saw something similar not to long ago, that's apparently on the market. It's called a Zypad.
Sorry the ball hasn't gotten rolling on this RP. Hopefully everyone still has interest in this! I hope to get it started next week (going on a camping trip tomorrow and will be gone for a few days).
Anyway, here's where I want some feedback. Do you want it started right at the beginning of exploring the ship, i.e. only a few members of military personnel in space suits making sure it's safe, or a few days after initial exploration where equipment is set up, basic controls are active, and some areas are known? The only areas you wouldn't really be able to access are the core room, bridge, stasis room, and med bay.
