Getting to know SciFiFur
If you've found your way to this topic then you're most likely a new member. If that's the case then welcome to SciFiFur! We all hope you enjoy your stay, and that you find something to your liking.
Unfortunately, because we have gathered such a variety of content and established tight RolePlaying and social groups, some new members can find SciFiFur quite confusing or even overwhelming when they first join. This topic will seek to help those members navigate themselves confidently around the forums.
If SciFiFur is one of the first forums you have ever joined, or if you would like to understand the idea of forums better, feel free to read the linked topic first [Topic not yet created]. Otherwise, read on. (Click to expand)
What is SciFiFur?
SciFiFur.net was created to fill a niche interest; a forum to appeal to ‘furries’ who have an interest in Science Fiction. Whether this interest lies in discussing science fiction shows or real life science, role playing, writing stories, drawing or appreciating related art, or all manner of other activities, we seek to accommodate them all.
What we offer
SciFiFur began simply as a forum, but has since grown massively to include a multitude of other features. Some of our most prominent features are as follows (although this list periodically changes, as we remove unused features or add new ones):
Recent Threads – If you have signed up and logged in to our site, you may have noticed the appearance of ‘Recent Threads’, a list of the 10 most recently updated topics, or ‘threads’. This is used to provide quick access to active discussions, and to help members keep on track of what is happening around the forum. However, if you don’t like this feature, you can always minimise it using the small minus symbol in the top right-hand corner.
Albums – If you would like to share a large amount of images on the site, you can create an album and store them that way. The images will be public unless you choose otherwise, and random pictures are featured down the left-hand side of the forum, providing publicity to the images hosted here.
The Xeno-Anthros Podcast, or XAP (pronounced Zap) is the forums official podcast, which can be found here. A segment is released roughly every month.
Arcade – Very popular amongst our more competitive members, the arcade provides a variety of games and includes ranked score tables.
Wiki – Currently still being developed, the Wiki includes information on the forum and forum members, as well as storing information about the fictional worlds and stories that are on the site. Like all Wikis, any member is free to edit it.
Blogs – Our blogs work like they do everywhere else. For more personal or informal thoughts, feel free to start a blog.
Twitter – SciFiFur has its own Twitter account, which we use to keep members informed about site developments. You can see the feed on the left-hand side of the forums list, or follow us here if you're a Twitter user yourself.
Where can I find X, Y, Z?
As we are a Science Fiction forum, we decided to have stylised names for our forum areas that fit the genre (so for example, the Video Games forum is called ‘Electronic Diversions’, and the Books forum is called ‘Compendium Portfolio’) However, we realise that these might be confusing, so we have tried to provide a simpler name in brackets after each forum title. If you are struggling to find a particular area of discussion, scan through the bracketed parts of our forum names.
While you are new to the forum this might still be confusing, so try using the following guide if you are lost (Each group of forums is identified by a horizontal blue bar containing the overall name, with the specific forums below it):
Symposium Lobby: New member introductions, general discussion, science discussion, polls and leaving members.
Audio and Visual Vault: TV, movie and video game discussion.
Symposium Library: Book discussion, member-created story submission and discussion.
Emblematic Mezzanine: Artwork (both created by members and in general), toys and models (including digital 3D models)
Symposium Stage and Productions: RolePlay foums including Out Of Character forum, new RolePlay proposals and an archive of old RolePlays.
Xeno-Anthros Podcast (XAP) Coms Station: Podcast episode catalogue, news and discussion.
References and Resources: Forum help (focussing on using specific features) and general computer help.
Forum Administration: Site news and announcements, member suggestions and bug reporting.
I am not a furry or am not very interested in Science Fiction. Is this site not for me?
Well oddly enough, that is absolutely fine! We aim primarily to please science fiction fans and furries, but anyone else is welcome so long as they abide by the forum rules. We will never look down on someone for not belonging to the furry fandom or for not having an interest in science fiction. If you like the site despite not belonging to our target audience, you are still very welcome.
