Best Summer Scifi movies so far?
I know we're still in the middle of the big movie season, but what is standing out for you guys? Super 8? Transformers 3? Green Lantern? Maybe X-Men First Class or Priest? I honestly haven't had the opportunity to see anything lately, so I'm wondering what I ought to start considering for my Blu-Ray library.
EDIT: OMG, with this topic, I have reached 2000 posts! Chirpy chirp to that!

i beg to differ with you dusty on green lantern. There is a lot that they could do with the franchise. That was the most accurate i think they could get without digging deep into the GL mythos. I think everyone was expecting it to be like the batman movies, dark and brooding, and that just isn't green lantern.
The complaints that I heard around the comic shop was that it wasn't the Hal Jordan that was from the books and actually it was just from the early books. So my vote far is for Green Lantern at least until i see Captain America, Cowboys and Aliens, and Transformers 3.

Re: Best Summer Scifi movies so far?
The movie just felt like a cash in. Kilowag? Sinestro? All the people they were advertising? You see most of them for 1 and I repeat 1 scene and a little blurp at the end.
Parralax? He wasn't a fallen ancient. He was basically a demon/space mantis thing. Even then, they treat this Big Bad, The Physical Embodiment of Fear, like a one off. Sinestro?
Spoiler
Sure we all knew he was a turn coat but there is literally no hint to it till the post credits scene, not to mention it was an obvious hang on for a sequel. Why not focus on making a good movie on its own then relying on the inevitable sequel to lift it up?
Hal Jordan? Ryan Reynolds was just not the actor for it. Everything felt wooden and he acted like he wasn't sure what the part entailed.
The CGI? Don't get me started. If it isn't broke, don't fix it. Why did the suit need to be CGI? It would have been cheaper and arguably would have looked better if it were a real suit. The effect when he is in space is this really weird fuzz around Hal Jordan's face where you can see its been edited in. Sloppy. Really sloppy.
The tone? I wasn't expecting nor-wanted a Dark Knight style darkness, but this didn't even really have a tone. It was just there, doing something but I'm not sure what. It didn't have the light hearted bad-assness of Iron Man, or the Youthful color of X-Men First Class.
I just did not like this movie. It was boring, un-focused, un-directed, and felt like another Action Hero movie designed to sell toys and nothing else.

that could be said about any of the comic movies that are scheduled to come out this year. How many toys have there been for Iron Man and Thor (which appeared months before the movies came out)? You have to take these movies for what they are...Movies and that's it. I enjoyed comic book movies and i'm going to go see as many of the as I can.

I wasn't too impressed with Green Lantern, either. It was a pretty snappy movie and it had its moments, but it isn't a movie that I crave to add to my collection. It is worth a look if you were into the comic character, and worth it even if you aren't. But not something, in my opinion to really rave all that much about.
As for Super 8...
Lord, where do I start.
Steven Spielburg strikes again?
Yeah, it was really that bad. I find it extremely providential that the movie began with a train wreck. That was what the movie was. Big, dangerous alien monster that tries (and fails miserably) to make an E.T.-esque emotional connection with the audience, but piles up all over the screen as a bunch of conceptual gibberish - just like the box cars did in the train wreck that started the movie. A very good performance by Kyle Chandler was completely unable to save the film.
I am keeping an eye out for good movies, myself, I plan to see the next Transformers movie soon. I don't expect much more out of it than the first two films delivered, but I hope it is as fun as they were. They were bad, without a doubt. But they were fun - if for nothing more than their awesome stupidity gave me good laughs.

Re: Best Summer Scifi movies so far?
Well I saw Captain America yesterday and I was kind of surprised and happy with the direction they took it. Instead of trying really hard to avoid the campy/corny nature of Captain America they decided to play to it as a strength. They didn't try to fit in any irony or cynicism. When most other heroes now days are shown as arrogant, reluctant, crazy, or immature Captain America stands out as the prototypical Super Hero. He IS a good guy, no qualifiers, no luggage. He'll be the leader of the Avengers, because that is what he is, a leader and a hero.
Oh and stay after the credits.

Saw Captain America as well. It was indeed quite good. Captain America is a hard character to write for, yet they hit it out of the park here.
...and yeah, stay after the credits (of course, if you've seen other Marvel Studios productions you'd know that by now).

Re: Best Summer Scifi movies so far?
i was never big into marvel. So i can't really say how hard the character is but they did an amazing job with just the cgi alone. The story was just as amazing. My question now is when is there gonna be a Superman movie of the same degree of Captain America?

There is some info on Wikipedia. It seems like there is another Superman movie in the works, but I have no idea what it will be like.

Yeah. Well it can't be any worse than Superman Returns, but that isn't saying much since that movie was pretty terrible.
Did anyone go see Rise of the Apes?

Re: Best Summer Scifi movies so far?
I went and saw Captain America. And... (hold your breath!), I like it!
In fact, I liked it lots!
And that's saying something. I was never a fan of the superhero when I was a kid. If anything, Captain America seemed to me like a waste of good paper. I mean, a guy with a shield? How absolutely gay is that?! I just couldn't see how he could stack up against all the other superheros DC comics was pumping out.
He could not even begin to touch Superman. He couldn't begin to get anywhere near the raw coolness of Batman. However, I hadn't realized that Captain America was created solely to appear to the people who read comics back in that era. And this was a point which the movie was very eloquent in laying out.
Captain America was a World War 2 hero. He beat up on Nazis and bested the ultimate Nazi uber-bad-guy - which was written for the character to raise moral for our troops. Hot damn. Give the troops something fun and inspiring to read. Completely awesome. Unlike some of the other comics of the era, like Sgt. Rock, and a few other comics that were all about doom-and-gloom and all things of the war which were dark, Captain America was bright, fun and an ostentatious hero. And like I said, the movie portrayed this with almost absolute perfection.
Now... if only other superhero movies could pull this off. One can hope, right? I certainly do. I am tired of seeing all of these run-of-the-mill-let's-bring-the-comics-to-life superhero movies.
Although, this last X-men movie had some class, too. But, besides Captain America, it stands as the only superhero movie in the several of them that have come out, that were really, really good.
