Most of the time you find out about a game months or sometimes years before the game is released. You get excited, but then you have to wait for the game and it gets really annoying. This is what's happening for me with Rage and Diablo III.
The folks behind the upcoming PC game Hard Reset are taking a different approach. They haven't showed anything about the game or even mentioned it up until now. Hard Reset is a new PC FPS that will be coming out next month. It will have no multiplayer, this is a strictly single player game. More importanly, it looks absolutely awesome.
How many games have tried to capture the look of Blade Runner? Lots... How many of them have ever really succeeded? Not many. This one nails the look and the tone.
Don't believe me?
I have to say, I'm excited! If you want more info you can go to the game's website here.
Working in secret on a game for the last two years, 35 people from three major developers in this country forming their own studio, materials released so far look... promising. So why do I have this ominous feeling of dread when I think of this game? Maybe it's because Deus ex release is so close and it could easily overshadow this game or maybe it's because of the PC exclusiveness. And while I am glad that my entertainment radiator could get a chance to shine, aiming at a single platform may be equivalent of shooting oneself in the foot. Nah! It's probably because I really do hope that this game will be good, but my on-board pessimist tries to save me the disappointment or, alternatively make sure that I will be pleasantly surprised. Either way it's good to be alive. Two interesting games to look forward to.
From the people that have written about it thus far, it is good. Developing for the PC is a much easier thing to do than to get your game on the consoles. You don't have to go through licensing and certification to get your game on the PC, so starting there is probably a good thing for a new studio. Besides, I think that the PC deserves a good exclusive now and then.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to see more good games on PC. This whole “PC is dead” business is rather perplexing to me. My PC is fine, and its wasting electricity like there was no tomorrow.
But gamers and developers alike seem to be turning away from this platform, and so, making a game on a PC might be a bad marketing decision (although I think I understand why they are doing it). On the other hand, maybe some good PC exclusives is what it takes to prove that information about the PC's death were grossly exaggerated. After all Witcher and Witcher 2 were developed on PC first and in case of the sequel it was a make or brake for CDP RED. If the game wouldn’t sell the studio would have probably folded. So PC is still standing strong and I do hope we will get some good games on it in the future.
The migration to consoles is a financial thing. The console share of the market has grown leaps and bounds over the last 2 console generations, so much so that it greatly over shadows the PC sector. If you think about it, its harder and pricier to get a gaming grade PC then it is an Xbox.
Publishers and Developers are in it to make money. Seeing has the console sector dwarfs the PC sector, they tend to focus on it. But developing exclusively for PC isn't a bad plan. Look at all the indie games on STEAM. Look at Battlefield 3 and DICE's philosophy of building for the PC first THEN porting to consoles.
Sadly you are right. Strange how world can change in just a few years. Makes me feel old... And I'm not that old god dammit! What's this?! Oatmeal?! I refuse to eat that! Nurse!
Now for the game itself, the teaser looked promising, but the gameplay featured in the trailer got me somewhat worried. The shooty-explody stuff was nice and my inner child psychopath was mighty pleased. I just hope that it won't amount to a “Serious Sam in The Dark Future!”. When you chose that setting a compelling story is a must. I guess they know that and are only showing pretty explosions to woo their audience and not to reveal the story ahead of time (I hope).
I'm hoping for the same thing. I don't want a Serious Sam type of game, I mean don't get me wrong I like Serious Sam and can't wait for part 3, but I am hoping that Hard Reset falls somewhere between Deus Ex and Serious Sam in pace.
The nice thing is though, we don't have to wait too much longer to find out. I hope it gets released on Steam though.
