I'm absolutely certain that I've already made a thread about Adventure Time, and the aspects of it that I'm about to discuss, but I can't find it, so I'll try making a new one and hope no one minds.
As I think I've pointed out before, Adventure_Time was revealed to actually be post-apocalyptic (I believe the only current children's show of the genre to exist). Lots of references have been made to the Land of Ooo being Earth after a nuclear war, with ruins of cities, cars and things like TVs littered around. In fact, the first shot in the intro to every episode is a scorched land with undetonated bombs sticking out of it and skulls and weapons dotted around.
Well, the most blatant reference has now been revealed, and in an interesting (and quite emotional, considering the show) way. The following tape was found among the Ice King's secret stash, and if you're not familiar with the show then suffice to say that the Ice King is the ridiculous and pathetic on-off antagonist of the series, and voiced by the same guy who does Spongebob, which should tell you everything you need to know. Anyway, this is among his tapes:
In particular, as a fan of the show, I love the subtle reference to "my princess Betty", since the main motivation of the Ice King is kidnapping princesses, which has until now been seen as an unexplained behaviour. I honestly think those few minutes were masterful, especially for a kids cartoon show, and my already rather large respect for Pendleton Ward has grown even more now.
He is a greater contributor to my beloved genre of post-apocalypse than most of the recent big-budget movies that claim to belong to the category put together.

wow that was really emotional for the show and I never really thought about it as a post-apocalypse genre show. I'll have to look at the opening more closely

Yeah, it's usually just in the background, but there are subtle hints such as Finn being the last human (well, there is that one episode where they find other humans, but they're all savages living in an abandoned subway system, so that's another 'hint')
The following video shows a few pictures that demonstrate how common it is in the backgrounds, but it's not a fantastically well put together video, so apologies in advance:
They missed a couple of other obvious ones though, like the River of Junk and so on. But yeah, it's there ^^
adventure time is so much better than mlp
The way I see it, MLP is a better children's show, but Adventure Time is the show more worthy of internet fame. The jokes are more suited to the 'random' loving, strange humour of the internet crowd of 16+ guys who spend their time on the Chan boards. MLP I can appreciate as a show for young children but don't understand how it's become popular. Adventure Time I'm amazed hasn't gone the way of Invader Zim yet, tanking in a children's network setting but living on in the cult mindset of people above the target age group.
Edit: Absolutely wonderful Pendleton Ward quote I came across; he describes Adventure Time as being set "after the bombs fell and the magic came back".
