    Default Writing Tool: Ommwriter

Ommwriter is a word processor stripped down to basics with a focus on words and not distracting you with half a million different controls and then slap a "zen" feel with multiple (but not too many) background and sound selections and you have a virtual sensory deprivation tank for extracting words. Unfortunately right now there is only a (free) Mac version of the program but they are developing Windows and Linux ports as I am posting this.

    The site: http://www.ommwriter.com

I recommend you look at the video on the site too.

They are working on a Windows version now due to popularity. It was initially for Mac since this tool was originally developed for internal use and they are Mac lovers heh heh.

I don't write nearly as much as I used to, but when I do, it's all in Textedit on my Mac (seriously, I think the only thing more basic than it is actual pencil and paper =P ).

However, it does sound interesting, and I definitely could have used it a couple years ago when I was still in high school.

Still, that is an unfortunate happenstance that the site is down >,=,>

    Site's back up now though.
It is certainly very basic, but most of my creative work is with a pen and paper now. Word is only used to type it up for convenience.

So. This is what I wrote:

I'm conducting a review of the OmmWriter, using OmmWriter.

Hopefully in the full version there will be a lil spell check. maybe a lil more variation for different kinds of texts or even support to upload your own artwork or maybe have just a wider library. Even things like packs. Such as fanfic writers having a pack for their favorite anime. But this is a nice start.

I really want to see where this technology goes. It really does make a big difference in how it feels to type.

I think my favorite sound to use is the Number 5.... Maybe. I dunno.

Number One aint so bad. but my own keyboard is already so much louder.

Number Two is pretty neat. Maybe a bit too sharp for me though.

Number Three is a bit louder. Nicer than Number two but it seems to fallow the same Idea. It seems many of this is Rain drops.

Number Four. Yeah. this one feels a little too rushed when you add it up. Or when you type too fast like I do. It's not bad thought. I guess if you slow down to really think of what your doing it aint too bad.

Number Five. This one I like a lot because of the ecco. But I'll have to keep going to really find out what suits me best.

Number Six. This is pretty good. Similar to Number Five but a bit softer. if I could combine the two this might be my favorite effect.

Number Seven. This is a lot like....... well Ping Pong! Not really relaxing. But again that's not always the mood you want to convey. This really IS just a Beta test.

    Now for the Music.

Number one. yeah. pretty simple to be honest.

A quick note on text size. I like the +1 because it is easier on my eyes with the light background. Hopefully more backgrounds will be out.

Number Two for music is a bit distracting. I think they need to contract a few Ambient artists. Not just go with random sounds.

Number Three. I actually like this one.... But as I scanned through them it seemed to get a little rough and I can see where it would get a little distracting. Still it's nice for a beginning. Yes. It's that sudden drop of the piano that gets me. Really sorta strikes me as random. Altogether the music is far too loud. Maybe there should be a volume slider?

Number four. I'd almost expect to hear the intro Green Man by Type O Negative. No music in this one. That helps quite a bit.

Number five. Here we have simple night time sounds. This is by far too distracting given the white background. Night time should have white text and a black background. Maybe in the future they can have a time line. where after a specified line the music will change. even as your reading. Hay... that makes sense. Interactive reading. As you read on the mood of the document changes. Heh.... I should sell these Ideas. I could make absolutely NOTHING!

Number Six. This sounds much like Number Four but with less volume... Oh no wait church bells. Did some one die? or get married... I can never tell which are the silver bells. Murrr.... this one could go well with a dark background to be a evil tone. Or a light background to be a cheerful Sunday afternoon tone. Hay birds. Shut up! your getting in the way of the bells. Oh no.. here come some wind chimes... I might get some music. There are more bells! I have ADD.

Number Seven is simply the sound of the ocean. I'd expect to hear Seagulls. Maybe even some nautical sounds like ships or harbor. Or dolphins.... Ceta's love Dolphins. Cuz they are Dolphins. Sometimes. How can a Killer Whale walk on two legs? That's easy! One foot in front of the other!

In all I like this software. I just wish I could see my typoes. Without the lil warnings my text looks beautiful, but I know better. I'm an awful writer. This just makes me feel good I guess.

Amber that was a pretty exhaustive review, not bad at all. Personally I tend to still use a more traditional word processor and then use Ommwriter for when I need to get a load off my chest in a hurry or to try and spark a bit of creativity when I am struggling and then just copy&paste the content into a normal document =^.=.^=

Oh and by the way the downloads are back up everyone!

I'll have to give this a look. I've been living inside of MS Word for years that I've just gotten used to the clutter. Maybe a back to basics app would do me some good when I write my reviews.

Also, I wonder if we broke the site... Would've been cool if we sent that much traffic over there.

I'm probably a bit late on this, but oh well.

I love this tool! I've been stuck with an ugly text or word document always stuck in my face with out-of-mood music from my iTunes play lists. This is very, VERY awesome.

For the love of all that is holy.

where is my windows version? where?!??!?!?

    o_o

that is like, a godsent program. If i could get that and put it on both laptops, then when at uni i could simply...engage it, headset on, and write.

I get distracted so much by crap at uni...

Honestly, I wasn't particularly hopeful from the description you gave Iscin. But now that I see what they're trying to do myself... it's a potentially interesting idea. Just wish there was a Windows version.

    Indeed.

I've seen the windows things, but they all seem to focus on sensory deprivation. Which is NOT what a writer (in my opinion) needs.

I.E: They put you with just a blank screen and green text. Nothing else. Or a white and black screen...etc etc.

What this does is that it provides the senses with something to occupy, i.e: the snow/wind background with music, and sounds of typing. Relaxing
