Scififur.net Book Group?
Would anyone be interested in a book group/club for the forums?
We could pick a book, all read it, and then discuss it on the forums. I know I'd be interested in it, but we'd need at least ten people to participate for it to be really worth doing.

This interests me since I need to start reading again.

Sure. No clue how often I'd be able to participate (Limited funds), but I'm interested.

Similar to silver, but as well as not being able to spend much, Christmas was a BIIIG book buying time for me. You'll all be happy to know every single one of the books I bought was SciFi, but it'd given me a lot to get through before I can take on more. I believe I have 6 or 7 books under my bed I've either not started or only got to about the first chapter.
If it was a book I already had and had read, I'd definately jump in :p

Hm, well hopefully we'll get some more interest here. I know that not everyone is going to be able to read every book, so if we have a good sampling of people then the chances are that we'll at least have a good group of people for each group.

I wonder why not a single other person has mentioned the library =^.=.^=
La Bibliothèque (my fav French word) is the best resource for all this book reading business and I admit this resource has meant that I have not supported some of my favourite authors, though I intend to fix that shortly. Point being that I am sure we can all join in with a chosen book provided it is a) Not exclusively printed in Chinese Mandarin and b) Your library pass is not revoked.
Have you considered starting a new social group for the book club Daryn?

That has a lot to do with the sheer amount I owe in late fees.

It has potential. Do we have to look up whether our suggestions are in audio book format though?

Well, I generally prefer audiobooks, but that's just personal preference. The books I'll be looking at will be in audio format, but you guys don't have to, you can read the paper or e-book if that's your thing.

Audiobooks are just the format in which Daryn and I take our books. Daryn has a vision problem which prevents him from reading books very easily, and I drive truck for a living (which leaves little time for reading). That isn't to say, however, that all reviewed books need to be available in audio format. It would be nice if all of the books we reviewed were, but it isn't necessary to pick a book for review, either.

Are we going to start this thing then guys? We should probably have each person in order pick the book for each month or whatever cycle is chosen for the book group. Oh and in advance I WILL be choosing a Neal Asher novel... just got to decide which one...

Would love to get this started, but we're going to need more than the people that have expressed interest so far though. I know that with only 4 people we're going to end up with months that nobody participates.

Here are the top 3 books that I'll nominate for us to read.
- Daemon by Daniel Suarez
- The Mote in God's Eye by Jerry Pournelle and Larry Niven
- Mona Lisa Overdrive by William Gibson

Hmmm, got to say I love Gibson. I might pick that up if I can get through the rest of my list.
I have to ask for Clade by Mark Budz to be added to that list, especially for our biotech fans out there.

Yeah, so everyone nominate 3 books. The ones that get more nominations will move further up.

Re: Scififur.net Book Group?
Before I make my suggestions, do we have a size limit? I imagine we'll have a time limit, so should we give a rough guide to pages? Say, 200 - 300 if we're doing it weekly?
I can read pretty quick, but some weeks I just won't have time to go through a lenghty tome. Then again, some of my suggestions would probably be over 400 or so pages if we don't cap it :/

Re: Scififur.net Book Group?
Nah, there's no size limit. We'll work the time limit to be appropriate to the book that we choose.

Okay then:
Trading in Danger by Elizabeth Moon
Clade by Mark Budz
Starfist: First to Fight by David Sherman and Dan Cragg

Trading in Danger gets my vote. It's the only one of the three I've got half a hope of finding without having to spend an hour's drive to the nearest Barnes & Nobel.

Haha!
I'm like you! Audible is hard pressed to sell me a book that is less than 30-hours long!
But I think I will be reading (listing) to "Daemon" by Daniel Suarez next week. I'll do my best to get my opinion/review in by the week after.

I really enjoyed that one. One thing you'll notice when you listen to the audiobook is that the narration is excellent. Multiple voices for characters, even voice effects. It's very well done.

Since I'm not going to get to the bookstore anytime soon, I'm going to have to make do with a few suggestions pulled out of the back stacks:
- The Last Legion by Chris Bunch
- Gateway by Frederik Pohl
- Ensign Flandry by Poul Anderson

I just bought Daemon on Audible tonight. I will be listening to it over the next few days and writing my opinion about it shortly after that.

Hope you enjoy it. I really liked it and its sequel a lot. I guess Daemon will be the first book we talk about then, so if anyone else wants to join in, pick it up and give it a read.
