Re: Intrest Check: Realistic Space Combat
I would be. I have my own Ideas for strategies regarding that...

I can't promise anything, and I'm going away for a week or so soon, so I couldn't contribute much if it started now, but yeah, I think I could get in on this :p

Re: Intrest Check: Realistic Space Combat
What would most likely be a working situation (From a physics stand point) Would be ships set on intersecting orbits and taking shots at each other each time they passed by each other.
A realistic situation would probably involve surface to orbit weapons if they are around Earth. Just something to consider.

Re: Intrest Check: Realistic Space Combat
I would think that in orbital space there would be some degree of limit on how high or low you could go. For example, if you lowered your altitude, you'd have to go faster in order to stay in orbit, as per applications of Newton's laws.
Warning! Math Ahead!
v= √((G*M)/r)
Where v = the velocity of the orbiting object (m/s)
G= Newton's universal gravitational constant, about 6.673*10^-11
M= the mass of the body being orbited, in this case the Earth, 5.9742 × 10^24 Kg
r= the radius of the orbit from the earth's center of gravity, 6,378.1 Km (Earth's radius) + 320 Km (Reasonable orbit radius)
So plugging it in, an object at 320 Km above the Earth would have a speed of 7714.799 m/s, or about 17,257.1 mph.
Raise it by 80 km and the speed goes to 7669.136 m/s, or about 17,155.3 mph.
Doesn't seem like much of a difference, but after a few orbits it'll start to add up.

We just are? The game takes place in a parallel universe where anthros evolved instead of humans? I'd rather veer away from the "test tube soldiers created to fight in humanity's stead" approach. Sooo cliche...

Re: Intrest Check: Realistic Space Combat
I second Psion on this one. Or, we could just say that it's another planet at the same level of technology.
Then again, the Alternate-universe Earth one would allow us to keep the currently existing nations mostly intact.
It all comes down to a matter of choice, really.

Re: Intrest Check: Realistic Space Combat
Looks like fun so far. But what about humans vs furries instead? Maybe there's multiple races out there and we have to find one to combat the other?
Still, if nothing else is considered I can go with Psion's idea.
Yorrick's Signature Home is a state of mind. Doesn't matter if you're in a golden palace, a cottage nestled in the mountains, or under a tattered blanket in a haystack, if you make the ground beneath your head a home, then you are home.

Well this is supposedly going to be only 50-60 years more advanced than our technology. Giving technological advances a lot of optimism, we could barely be exiting our solar system by then.
Then we could say Humans meet furries and they begin clashing for a few habitable worlds (That is, worlds that don't require teraforming.) That'd still involve low-orbit space fighting, possibly over said virgin world (with the added benefit of not having to worry about surface to orbit defenses), and weapons would still be fairly primitive compared to more advanced Sci-fi settings.
Overall, I think it's workable. Sorry to say that it sort of kills the OP's planned story setting though...

I prefer to veer away from that kind of plot. For every Extinctioners you have countless cheap pieces of drek. It's just a cliche that rarely has been done properly

So Just alternate earth or different planet then?

Seconded, here.

I'd also gladly join in. Sounds like fun and I know the math surrounding it.

Right then. I'll just go ahead and put up a new thread for this, may not wind up sticking to the plot the OP put up.
