Default Pressure: A Near-Future Space Combat RP

Setting: An alternate Earth solar system setting where humans never evolved, in their stead furries and scalies and whatnot did. The play takes place around Ceres, the dwarf planet of the asteroid belt.

There is a dispute about who has the right to claim it, a group of independent spacers or a nation of Earth. The players can choose which side they are on, I personally will be the captain of one of the Independent ships.

Each side will have five ships, capable of only minor maneuvers and ion engines to change their orbital path. They will not be able to do Star Wars style dodging out of the way of incoming attacks, as all the ships are too large and the propulsion technology is not good enough to do that.

All ten ships will have the same tech level armaments, 2 fully amiable lasers, one on each side of the ship, capable of 100 kW output, roughly enough to destroy a small car. They have full range of motion, but are primarily for cutting down incoming missiles and asteroids. Because of diffusion of the beam, they are only able to attack other ships within 150 km of each other. Remember that laser beams are invisible in vacuum.

In addition to the lasers, each ship can have up to 10 torpedo tubes, with torpedoes that are either nuclear, grape-shot, or impact (Explosions have no effect in space, so torpedoes are designed to slam chunks of metal into each other at high speed). Also, note that Nukes will not cause an EMP as there is no magnetic field or atmosphere around Ceres.

All of the ships were designed to go into combat, so have such things as Faraday cages surrounding all the electronics and extremely thick combat armor (20 cm or more of armor plating)

Other weapons and can be added as long as they are roughly within our current tech level. So things like flak guns or ECMs can be added, but energy shields cannot.

The character sheets are as follows

    Name:

    Race:

    Position on ship:

    Training:

    ___

If you are the first one to take one of the ships, you must list the full armament of it.

Finally, remember. This is to be realistic space combat. If you took high school physics, follow it to the letter.

    Name: Varok-Hu Zellion

Race: Hybrid: frill-necked lizard and gecko

Position on ship: Captain and tactical advisor of the Independents.

Training: Former French Navy, Cosmonaut training under the Russians from before he defected to the Independent spacers.

    Ship: The Issac Newton

Five decked ship, based on a heavy freighter design but modified and built for combat.

Armament: 10 torpedo tubes, 2x general purpose 100 kW laser, 4 externally mounted flak cannons, two mounted rail gun turrets capable of 200 MJ, ECM anti-missile system, EM cloaking (Radar invisibility), 8 conventional gun turrets.

Defense: 40 cm Heavy titanium-aluminum alloy hull, reinforced by 5 cm Carbon steel exterior

All weapons are hooked up to the ship's computer, which has the ability to spot an incoming projectile and use one of the weapons systems to act against it in 1/10th of a second. Such a defense renders all but close range projectile attacks essentially ineffective. Lasers would still work within that range. (For example, if the ship's railgun was firing an 8 kg round, it would be able to go 700 meters before being cut down.)

Captain Zellion Sat strapped in his zero-gravity couch in the CIC, deep within the heart of the Issac Newton.

"Stand by for orbital insertion." He says to the Navigator nearby. He feels a bit of acceleration as the ion drives kick in to bring the ship into a stable orbit around the large body. He opens the intercom to the ship.

"All hands, we are entering a combat zone. Begin visual and electronic tracking, intelligence says there could be as many as 5 enemy vessels in orbit.

"Furthermore, to protect the ship in the event of a hull breech, all personnel are to suit up and stand by for ship depressurization. That is all."

He unbuckles himself from the chair and kick off of it, sailing and landing smoothly next to the pressure suit storage area. He pulls out his own suit and puts it on as the rest of his crew does the same. He resumes his seat as the air hisses into the ventilation ducts, being pulled back into the life support system until it was needed again.

He touches the side of his helmet, opening up the comm channel again. "Action stations, action stations. Set condition one throughout the ship. Power up the main generators and load all weapons." In the CIC as well as the rest of the ship red lights turn on in the silent vacuum. Crew members load torpedoes and ammunition to all the weapons.

    "Now we wait..."

Are we to assume that the political evolution of Earth was the same or different?

    (Just asking quick-like)
Non est ad astra mollis e terris via.

Do you ever look up at the stars at night, and imagine what lays within?

<< Pretty much. I'm assuming most of the west still stands, since it's a bit in the future. Eastern Europe, however... you know how it goes with them.>>
